Backstory: Winston is one of our puppies and was recently returned to us when his family needed help rehoming. He came back to us alongside Dior, who joined him for the transition. We’re taking the time to thoughtfully reassess Winston as an individual and ensure his next placement truly fits who he is now, not just who he was as a puppy.

Dognality: Winston is a sweet, balanced dachshund with a lovely mix of affection and independence. He’s cuddly and enjoys being close to his people, but he doesn’t need constant physical contact to feel secure. With new people, Winston approaches cautiously but calmly — he’s thoughtful, observant, and settles in comfortably once he knows the situation is safe.

Growing up, his nickname was “Red 40,” and while he’s more laid back as an adult, he still appreciates a good outlet for his energy. He enjoys play, activity, and engagement, but he also understands how to settle when it’s time to relax. He does especially well in homes that balance enrichment with structure.

Winston communicates clearly with other dogs and has healthy, appropriate boundaries. He uses growls as information, not escalation, and has done wonderfully with the other dogs in our home. He currently presents as dog-neutral and adaptable, and would be happy either as an only dog or with a canine companion he can occasionally play with to burn off energy when his people are busy.

He does guard high-value treats and special toys with other dogs, but his boundaries are clear and predictable, and he has not shown escalation. A home that understands and respects dog communication will find Winston very easy to live with.

Winston is crate trained, potty trained, food motivated, and responds well to routine and structure. He enjoys squeaky toys and play, and while he hasn’t lived with cats, we believe a careful introduction could be successful. With people, including children, he is calm and tolerant, and we believe he could do well in homes with kids of any age.

Ideal Home: Winston will thrive in a home where his boundaries are understood and respected, his energy needs are met, and his communication is listened to. He is a wonderful, adaptable boy who can fit into many types of households as long as he has consistency, enrichment, and people who appreciate clear, healthy dog communication.
